The sun-drenched island of Mauritius

Shipwreck Mauritius,the artificial reefs that provide a home and a habitat in the ocean.Jean-Yves BIGNOUX/Canon EOS 7D ,with Ikelite underwater housing ,DS 160 Ikelite flash.

 

There are approximately 450 underwater shipwrecks surrounding  Mauritius,with some shipwrecks dating as a far back as the 16th century Like many shipwrecks worldwide they act as artificial reefs which in turn provide there own habitats for many marine species .

With over 345 km of coastline that Mauritius offers ,these shipwrecks sustain an underwater ecosystem that gives shelter and a home to many marine species .

There are a further 86 shipwrecks that have been found that span the vast Mauritian territorial waters and dependency islands that form part of the Republic of Mauritius such as Agalega ,Chagos,St Brandon and Rodrigues islands.

The total number of shipwrecks that have been identified to date in Mauritian territory is 540.

Mauritian underwater shipwrecks provide further research and knowledge in marine archaeological preservation whilst providing cultural and historical preservation .The island itself has been rich and vast in marine archaeological findings for many years now .

As for the sciences such as marine biology and to some extent oceanography ,underwater shipwrecks provide wider opportunities for the research and study of these unique habitats inside the shipwreck ,there ecosystem formations and interactions with the surrounding underwater environment of these shipwrecks themselves .

Around 40 shipwrecks at varying depths are scuba dive sites and can be accessed for underwater exploration ,both for recreational and technical purposes in Mauritius and the dependency of Rodrigues island.

For just over 37 years shipwrecks began being scuttled (sank )into the tropical waters of Mauritius to act as artificial reefs A practice which has had many positive results thus far.

Il y a environ 450 épaves sous-marines entourant l’Ile Maurice,avec quelques épaves datant d’aussi loin qu’un le 16e siècle comme beaucoup d’épaves dans le monde qu’ils agissent comme des récifs artificiels qui à son tour fournir leurs propres habitats pour de nombreuses espèces marines .

Avec plus de 345 km de côte que l’île Maurice offre ,ces épaves maintenir un écosystème sous-marin qui donne le logement et un accueil pour de nombreuses espèces marines .

Il y a en plus 86 naufrages qui ont été trouvés qui couvrent le vaste dépendance mauricienne et les eaux territoriales d’îles qui font partie de la République de Maurice, comme l’archipel des Chagos, Agaléga,St Brandon et îles Rodrigues.

Le nombre total d’épaves qui ont été identifiées à ce jour dans le territoire mauricien est 540.

Mauritian épaves sous-marines fournissent d’autres recherches et connaissances en conservation archéologique maritime tout en assurant la préservation culturelle et historique .l’île elle-même a été vastes et riches en découvertes archéologiques marins pendant de nombreuses années maintenant .

Comme pour les sciences telles que la biologie marine et l’océanographie dans une certaine mesure ,épaves sous-marines offrent des possibilités plus larges pour la recherche et l’étude de ces habitats uniques à l’intérieur de l’épave ,il y a des formations de l’écosystème et interactions avec l’environnement sous-marin environnant de ces épaves eux-mêmes .

Autour de 40 épaves à diverses profondeurs de plongée sont des sites de plongée et peut être consultée pour l’exploration sous-marine, tant pour des fins récréatives et techniques à l’Ile Maurice et la dépendance de l’île Rodrigues.

Pour un peu plus de 37 ans d’épaves a commencé à être sabordé (a coulé dans les eaux tropicales )de Maurice d’agir comme des récifs artificiels d’une pratique qui a eu de nombreux résultats positifs jusqu’à présent.

We as humans live on an ocean planet ,with how i might term “glimpses of terrain”,land itself encompasses approximately 29 percent of the earths surface,with the remaining 71 percent constituting that of the seas and oceans.

The seas and oceans do contribute in part to the sustenance to life on the planet .The ocean planet we live upon is indeed a vast and practically speaking expansive realm of nature ,it is in fact the home of a voluminous amount of life ,rich in complexity and that of variety that marine habitats boost much the same biodiversity when compared to the worlds rainforests as a reference point .

This sheer amount of marine biodiversity is rivaled by the biological ,geological and natural environmental showcase the ocean has offered of billions of years ,in time scales the oceans of the globe have been in constant and evolving existence for around 3.8 billion years ,it has been theorized that life on planet earth began in our oceans.

Having said that the observation and study of our oceans via either research and scientific study teaches us about life on earth as it was and as it is up to present day notwithstanding sea life itself.

Fundamentally the seas and oceans has up to this day provided and an abundance of medicines ,foodstuffs,recreational activities and of course human life ,while sheltering all the known marine species cataloged up to present day.

Another fundamental yet obvious conclusion one can ponder upon is that in many many parts of the world most of the tourism,hospitality and travel industry is supported by many sea and ocean going activities,which by current estimates contribute to both national and globalized economies to the tune of approximately 19 trillion US Dollars per year and that figure has been rising in the past 10 years.

The ocean planet as it stands contribute in part to the sustenance of life on our planet.For instance the natural barometer and regulation of planet earth climate is due part to the oceans effect on weather ,while certain marine life either directly or indirectly help partly maintain the climate.

Marine species of many shapes and sizes also have an intrinsic value to many cultures around the planet ,which through both historical and marine archeological records and reports have pointed out over the last 300 years and beyond .These lasting associations and bonds with the oceans exited before many nations,political boundaries and sciences evolved .

Nations worldwide and by default humankind have used the oceans for trade,recreation and transportation for centuries. Food sources emanating from the ocean are by far are one of the largest food sources globally .

The oceans themselves from both a marine biological and oceanographic point of view could be regarded as a culmination of vastly interconnected ecosystems that form the largest single living organism in the world,in fact the oceans contain the most living species on this planet of any habit know thus far,and there is still much to learn

In terms of global population ,around 54 percent of the planets people,live ,work and play in coastal areas and near coastal areas .

The true and pure aspect of water ,being in which the oceans are entrenched in ,gives a possibility of endearment when we consider both the nostalgic and philosophical aspects of water on our planet ,which have been pointed out over centuries by philosophers ,scientists and writers .

The oceans were born our of water ,a simple H2O represents this phenomenal chemical bonding aspect ,two parts hydrogen ,one part oxygen ,this in its self is special and even curious when we look at this chemistry .

Furthermore this bond is unique ,properties of this type are mathematically curious let alone from a chemical point of view ,yet water is stable .

Again life on planet earth and the critical aspect that water gives life on our planet ,as Italian scientist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci famously quoted ,that water is the driving force of all nature is genuinely fact based and true .

Our water world has inspired many from centuries ago to present day to romanticize,study,research and reflect on our oceans philosophically,technically and scientifically ,amongst many many other things .

My name is Jean-Yves Bignoux and I will be introducing the oceanic world from a professional rated scuba divers perspective, a marine science journalist and marine conservationist point of view.

However bare in mind and heart that i am not a scientist,i am one that looks and studies Oceanography and Marine Biology   and researches the marine science findings ,after many years of reading and reseraching these two topics and experiencing the underwater world as a proffesionally rated  Scuba diver ,seeking to understand the ocean world is a lifetime pursuit.

On this website I will endeavor to to use and explain the fundamental scientific principles and process of our oceans that you may or not be accustomed to,i will attempt and endeavor to explain in detail about or oceans and seas and life in it and our human interactions with it in a simplified manner where practically possible.

Of course the physical sciences such a Marine Biology and Oceanography and its theories and fundamentals will be used to explain the physical,geological and chemical principles of our blue planet ocean.

However bear in mind that marine science let alone science cannot explain every single thing in the oceans ,there is sill a lot to learn considering the size and scope of our oceanic world ,while conclusions from findings are not always conclusive as well .

Nevertheless explaining what is know thus far from our physical understanding of our oceans and the world for that matter is where we can start from ,sticking to scientific facts and findings .

I will use my experience and observations as a professional scuba diver for over 14 years ,with the backbone of the fundamental science of marine biology and oceanography to explain in better detail about the oceans and marine life .

On this website I will explain mainly the fundamental Oceanographic principles and Marine Biology principles so we learn from the basics to the advanced about our oceans and seas .

For example from an Oceanography I will write about and explain about the ocean floors and oceanic plate tectonics,marine sediments to tides and oceanic circulation and many more topics related specifically to Oceanography .

Within Marine Biology I will explain and write about the chemical and physical attributes of seawater ,fundamental biology to estuaries and coral reef ecosystems ,again many more topics with marine biology will be covered,

Moreover I will cover the hundreds of marine species I have photographed and talk about those marine species one by one .From time to time I will also write about the science of scuba diving itself .

I will input what I have learned from the oceans and seas to add context to marine science knowledge while using my underwater photography as a way point as well on certain marine species there habitats and there range and where they may be found .

Within my research and writing on marine life, Oceanography ,Marine Biology ,Underwater Photography and Scuba Diving I will put a main emphasis and focus on Mauritius also known as the Republic of Mauritius officially.

I will also highlight many things from around the world in marine sciences and marine life,as the oceans really don’t have borders,remember it is one ocean ,not a division of them in isolation.

The sea anemone….its scientific classification being Actinicria…They dance in the currents ..While providing a symbiotic relationship with the well known Clownish,  the Sea Anemone are indeed a close relative to corals,with this image been taking at a dive site in Grand Baie ,northern Mauritius.

Algae does form a special relationship as well with the sea Anemone ,in an exchange of  of sugars and oxygen that is inbedded in particualy green alage that is given to sea anemone,algae recieves photosynthesis of sunlight  and protection from would be predators .

 

Also known as Actiniaria,they are classified under the phylum Cnidaria

It is currently known to be over 1000 species of sea anemone in our planet ,and there may be many more species to be discovered ,given what we know of the breadth and depth oceans and is undiscovered species.

l’anémone de mer….sa classification scientifique d’être Actinicria…ils dansent dans les courants ..Tout en assurant une relation de symbiose avec le bien connu, clownesques l’anémone de mer sont en effet un proche parent pour les coraux, avec cette image, pris à un site de plongée à Grand Baie, le nord de l’île Maurice.

Les algues ne forment une relation spéciale avec l’anémone de mer ,dans un échange de de sucres et d’oxygène qui est dans inbedded particualy alage vert qui est donné à l’anémone de mer Algues,reçoit la photosynthèse de la lumière solaire et la protection contre les prédateurs serait .

Aussi connu comme Actiniaria,ils sont classés dans l’embranchement des Cnidaires

Il est actuellement connu pour être plus de 1000 espèces d’anémone de mer de notre planète ,et il y a peut-être beaucoup plus d’espèces à découvrir, compte tenu de ce que nous savons de l’ampleur et la profondeur des océans et des espèces non découvertes est.

Our interactions with the oceans and seas are expansive,if we consider the biological,sociological ,environmental impacts and interactions alone and how and why the marine environment is part of our existence on planet earth .

Capturing these attributes from a human perspective whilst considering scientific knowledge as a background to our understanding of marine life to better marine conservation efforts with the constant aid of underwater and land based photography.

While photography and scuba diving as a professional level diver gives one an essence of what our natural underwater world is made up of ,many life sciences and earth sciences such as Marine Biology and Oceanography can explain both the sum of its parts and produce and ever progressive picture of life and times in our oceans over time .

Furthermore in terms of the science of our oceans and seas ,we can only begin to explain the dynamic process of ocean life ,marine life after all is both a complex and broad scope area of study .

Having said that ,and touch on the interdisciplinary approach of many earth and life science,within marine biological and oceanographic studies there are many subclasses or specialties if you like , in areas of study within marine biology and oceanography itself

Areas within marine biology include ,but are not limited to herpetology ichthyology invertebrate zoology, phycology, marine mammalogy,fisheries science and marine conservation,again to name a few .
Within Oceanography ,many sub disciplines and specialties exist as well,with Biological Oceanography,Chemical Oceanography,Geological Oceanography and Physical Oceanography,these are formally termed the four branches of Oceanography ,bear in mind that most of these sub fields correlate and are interconnected .

From my point of view understanding the process and dynamics of our seas and oceans comes from a background as both a journalist and professional diver ,however by comprehending the science of our oceans by the way of Marine Biology and Oceanography disciplines I can better report on it and truly understand that from a scientific viewpoint.

My particular interest is in Marine Conservation Biology and Oceanography ,one that I have read and researched for many years as a journalist ,scuba diver and underwater photographer .Understanding what I write about ,take photos off and dive into are very important ,a understanding of the marine sciences solidifies and build upon what I have already know about our planet ocean and a key consideration …what I have observed .

So from my perspective I endeavor to approach the understanding of our oceans from a journalistic view ,whilst utilizing the scientific approach of Marine Biology and Oceanography ,however using my experience as both a professional scuba diver and ,journalist and underwater photographer to better understand our vast underwater world and its many and various marine life species .

Nos interactions avec les océans et les mers sont larges,si nous considérons l’,biologique, sociologique et les interactions sur l’environnement seuls et comment et pourquoi l’environnement marin fait partie de notre existence sur la planète terre .

La capture de ces attributs d’un point de vue humain, tout en tenant compte des connaissances scientifiques comme arrière-plan à notre compréhension de la vie marine pour mieux les efforts de conservation marine avec l’aide constante de la photographie sous-marines et terrestres.

Bien que la photographie et la plongée comme un plongeur de niveau professionnel donne à l’un une essence de ce que notre monde sous-marin naturel est composé de nombreux ,et des sciences de la Terre Sciences de la vie telles que la Biologie Marine et de l’océanographie peut expliquer à la fois la somme de ses parties et de produire et de plus en image progressive de la vie et l’époque dans nos océans au fil du temps .

De plus en fonction de la science de nos océans et mers ,nous ne pouvons que commencer à expliquer le processus dynamique de la vie des océans, la vie marine après tout est à la fois complexe et un large champ d’application domaine d’étude .

Cela dit, et le contact sur l’approche interdisciplinaire des sciences de la terre et de la vie de nombreux,dans les études océanographiques et biologiques de la mer il y a de nombreuses sous-classes ou spécialités si vous aimez , dans des domaines d’étude dans la biologie marine et de l’océanographie lui-même

dans les domaines de la biologie marine : ,mais ne sont pas limités à l’herpétologie l’ichtyologie zoologie des invertébrés, phycologie, marine mammalogy,les sciences halieutiques et aires marines de conservation, de nouveau pour n’en nommer que quelques-uns .
Dans de nombreuses disciplines de l’océanographie, sous et spécialités existent aussi,avec,l’Océanographie Biologique Océanographie Chimique,océanographie géologique et de l’océanographie physique,ces sont officiellement appelés les quatre branches de l’océanographie, garder à l’esprit que la plupart de ces sous domaines corréler et sont liés entre eux .

De mon point de vue la compréhension du processus et de la dynamique de nos mers et océans vient d’un contexte à la fois comme journaliste et plongeur professionnel ,cependant par comprendre la science de nos océans par la voie de la Biologie Marine et l’océanographie disciplines je peux mieux faire rapport sur la question et bien comprendre que d’un point de vue scientifique.

Mon intérêt particulier est en Marine Conservation Biology et l’océanographie, l’un que j’ai lu et étudié pendant de nombreuses années comme journaliste, plongeur et photographe sous-marin .Comprendre ce que j’écris sur ,prendre des photos et plonger dans sont très importants, une compréhension des sciences de la mer se solidifie et s’appuyer sur ce que j’ai déjà connaître sur notre planète océan et une considération clé …ce que j’ai observé .

Ainsi, de mon point de vue, je m’efforce d’aborder la compréhension de nos océans à partir d’un point de vue journalistique, tout en utilisant l’approche scientifique de la Biologie Marine et l’océanographie, à l’aide toutefois mon expérience en tant que professionnel padi et ,journaliste et photographe sous-marin afin de mieux comprendre notre vaste monde sous-marin et ses nombreuses et diverses espèces de la vie marine .
